Councilmen Recine and Cook Announce Retirement

Three city council seats will be vacant in this spring's election season.

The New Brunswick Democratic Organization has announced that City Council President Robert Recine and Councilman Jimmie L. Cook Jr. will not be running for reelection this year.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Garlatti's seat on the council also expires this spring, but she has announced her intention to run again, according to the organization.

According to the organization, Recine has served on the council since 1996, with three of those terms as president.

Cook was also elected to the council in 1996. He has been absent from multiple council meetings in recent months, due to personal health issues, Recine has said.

“New Brunswick is a better place because of the service of Bob Recine and Jimmie Cook. During their 16-year tenure, New Brunswick has become a modern, thriving urban center and a great place to live and work. This simply would not have happened without the leadership of Bob and Jimmie," Mayor James Cahill was quoted as saying in a release from the organization.

TK Shamy, chair of the New Brunswick Democratic Organization, said the organization would soon be announcing the process by which city council candidates would be screened.
