Gas Rationing to Begin Saturday, Nov. 3

License plates ending in an odd number can get gas on odd numbered days of the month, while plates ending in an even number can get gas on even numbered days of the month.

A system of gas dispensation is to begin Saturday, Nov. 3 to combat long lines at the pump in 12 counties throughout the state.

According to a release from the Governor's Office, citizens of the following counties are now limited on the days in which they can fill up their gas tanks, as per the state Office of Emergency Management: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren.

According to the state, plates containing an even number as their final numerical digit can fill up on even numbered days of the month, while plates containing an odd number as their final numerical digit can fill up on odd numbered days of the month.

The number to look for is the final numerical digit contained in the plate number, whether it is the final character on the plate or not, according to the governor's office.

So, for example, a theoretical plate number of "MVM 48Q" would have "8" as its final numerical digit, and would be permitted to fill up on an even day.

Specialized or vanity plates, those not displaying any numbers, will be considered odd numbered plates, the release said.

"Only in cases where there are no numbers and only letters is the plate counted as an odd number," said Kevin Roberts of Gov. Chris Christie's press office in an email to New Brunswick Patch.

This system does not apply to gas cans, such as those for generators, at this time, according to a spokesman from the governor's office.

This system is to begin at noon, Saturday, Nov. 3.

This dispensation system will remain in effect as long as the limited states of energy emergency declared by the state in those counties, the release said.

"With the challenges we face in the storm’s aftermath, we will be vigilant in enforcing this odd-even system, as we ease the stresses on the system," said Attorney General Jeffery S. Chiesa, in a prepared statement. "I encourage all New Jerseyans to abide by this system – motorists and retail dealers alike – to ease wait times and improve access for everyone. Those who choose to disregard this order will be prosecuted to the fullest extent permitted under the Governor’s state of emergency authority."

Hopefully by mid-month this will ease up a little bit, by then everyone should have power back and the refineries will be running again. It worked in 1974 and again in 1979 and should again now.

I would not call it rationing. It's being done to eliminate the lines, When they used this system during the oil embargo back in the 70's, the lines disappeared overnight,

If you have no numbers in your plate, you are automatically considered odd, so you go on odd days.

I believe it's the last number on your plate. So if your plate number is
WEZ23Y then you would be an odd day because the last
number on your plate is 3

It worked in 1974! Really. Guess you were too young to notice the lines. This really isn't rationing since there is no limit to how much you can get, only when. This only encourages people to go to the gas station every time then can to top it off. That's what creates the long lines. That and half the stations closed because of no power. Way to go governor make a bad situation worse. How about rationing pie?

OC has areas that do not have lines. Use some fuel to drive south and your fine as I have done.

The odd-even system back in the 70's did not solve the lines issue (lived through it). It just forced people on what day to get gas. It's a game of averages and the lines will be the same length until people are not panicked to have full tanks as more electricity is available for more stations, and the tanker trucks are able to get filled at the distribution centers.

Plan your trips, keep your speed lower as wind resistance is the biggest draw, and accelerate slower then normal. And god I hate to say this, but make sure your tires are inflated to the door label spec as that makes a big difference too.

It did not work in the 70s and at that time all gas stations were up and running, this is just one more way to inconvenience everyone. The same amount of people will still need Gas with very few gas stations open.

The Hess station on Rt. 34 in Matawan, just south of the railroad underpass, is now pumping gas tonight (Friday) after getting an 8,000-gallon delivery shortly after 7 pm, according to an attendant I spoike with there. The line is moving fairly well, under the watchful eyes of Matawan police officers. A good last chance to get ahead of rationing.

As they said in Apollo 13 "solve the problem people". Does gas rationing really solve a problem that should never, I repeat, never have been an issue. An where is the federal government in this? Do we see the U.S Army or U.s. Marines here. No but they are sent overseas in a moment. We need to address our citizens as well as a crisis overseas.

So what happens when someone is not aware of this new rationing policy and is on line. And still ignores it when told. i don't think there's enforcement at every station and there's no mention for the attendant to not serve them.
And some can say they were on line before it went into effect noon 11/3.

This isn't really a solution, 1) it makes more people want to go to the pumps based on perceived need. 2) anyone that takes a stats class and gets to queuing theory will know that for a fixed population and fixed number of stations that the flux will be the same by the third day.

Sorry Gov but should be looking to bring in more emergency generators to help more pumping stations get back online. The solution is supply side not demand side and messing with queues won't solve this problem.

I live in Brick and had to go to Toms River yesterday. I passed the lukoil on Brick Blvd, and several cars were filling up. This station was not opened the day before yesterday, so people might not have known they were at that point. However, only a little way down Brick Blvd, the WaWa had at least 100 cars on line for gas. I noticed the lines in Toms River were not that bad - towards Rt.9. As a matter of fact, when I filled up there was only one car ahead of me.
