George Street Co-op Accepting Applications for Retail Space

The Co-op is interviewing potential tenants for its second floor retail space.

The George Street Co-op has announced that it is currently accepting proposals from small businesses wishing to rent the second floor retail space in the Co-op's Morris Street building.

"The ideal tenant will be philosophically aligned with the founding principles of the Co-op, and will provide goods or services that appeal to our clientele," said said the Co-op in a press release.

The space is currently occupied by the Namaste Cafe, whose lease expires in February 2013, said Co-op member Laura Eppinger.

The Cafe has been invited to submit a proposal, Eppinger said.

"We'd like to collect other ideas from the community on the best use for this space," she said. "Ultimately, the Board of Directors will decide the best use for the space, based on a number of factors. But for now, we're just collecting ideas."

The space is approximately 450 square feet, with laminate flooring, large windows, a utility sink and a counter along one wall for eating.

The space has separate electric service, with shared hall utilities, and a shared second floor bathroom, according to the Co-op.

Interested applicants are asked to submit a proposal that described themselves and the nature and philosophy of their business, and will be asked to make an offer on what they can pay for rent.

"The Co-op will choose the best candidate based on a variety of factors, not necessarily the highest bidder. That said, we will also consider a proven ability to pay rent," the release said.

Follow-up interviews will be scheduled with the co-op Board of Directors, according to the Co-op.

Applications will be accepted through March, Eppinger said.
