UPDATE: Photo Gallery: 12th Annual New Brunswick Soap Box Derby

Kids and teens from all over New Jersey competed on Sunday in their own home made soap box derby racing cars for a chance to compete in the international derby race in Akron, Ohio.

Three young drivers from New Jersey will advance to the 75th Annual All American Soap Box Derby on July 21st in Akron, Ohio following Sunday's New Brunswick Soap Box Derby.

Held on Johnson Drive, the race featured 37 young soapbox racers, facing off in derby racers that they built themselves with their families and friends.

A classic car show by the Hollywood Night Cruisers was held in the nearby Johnson & Johnson parking lot during the derby.

The day's sponsors included Turtle & Hughes, Johnson & Johnson and the City of New Brunswick.

  • The Stock Champ was Jeffrey Clouser of Williamstown.
  • The Super Stock Champ was Julianne Miller of Keyport.
  • The Masters Champ was Alex Hawkins of Plainfield.

An expedition race will be held on June 16 in Newark for the purpose of drumming up interest in soap box racing among the youth there, according to New Jersey Soap Box Racing Organization President Michael Blackwell.
