Beck Slams Holt for Gutting Medicare by $741 Billion

CBO ESTIMATES SHOW MEDICARE CUTS WILL BE NEARLY 50% HIGHER

DAYTON, NJ – Eric Beck, a small business owner and the Republican Nominee for U.S. Congress in New Jersey’s 12th District, slammed Rep. Rush Holt today for his repeated votes to gut Medicare by an astounding $741 billion. The new figure, nearly 50 percent higher than earlier projections, was recently discovered, buried deep within Congressional Budget Office reports on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare).

“Major proponents of ObamaCare, like Mr. Holt, were repeatedly warned that their estimates of the law’s cost to Medicare were wrong,” Beck said. “Now, it’s come to light that the cuts that will be made to Medicare will cost the program $741 billion, thereby jeopardizing the future healthcare coverage of our senior citizens. Americans can finally see through the smoke and mirrors that politicians like Mr. Holt used by trying to hide the real severity of these cuts.

“Finally seeing through the fraudulent presentation on which ObamaCare was sold, our fears have been confirmed that this could mean disastrous benefit cuts for seniors. Mr. Holt and other politicians in Washington can’t hide any longer from their plan to bankrupt Medicare in order to push our nation toward a single-payer system.

“We have to wonder whether Mr. Holt was lying or just uninformed when he told an audience in 2011, ‘I am not going to let anything happen to Medicare as you know it now.’

Beck said that repealing and replacing ObamaCare will be his first priority in Congress.

“The first step is repealing this destructive law before it endangers our seniors and robs them of their benefits. Medicare must be reformed and strengthened – not bankrupted. But, we also need to provide alternatives; and I believe that a value-based healthcare system that reduces cost, improves quality and expands access, all while putting patients first, is the solution we need to make healthcare affordable for all Americans, including seniors.”

The right wing GOP hates Medicare, they were opposed to Medicare from day 1; they, along with the AMA, vehemently fought against Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s. Ronald Reagan toured the country making anti-Medicare speeches. He said that Medicare would lead to socialism and loss of freedom. Sorry, I'm not buying this nonsense that the GOP is a defender of Medicare or Medicaid. It's laughable. Without Medicare, the average senior would just skip medical care or would most certainly go bankrupt from medical costs. Medicare is not perfect but without it, millions of seniors would just die or suffer unnecessarily. The deficit hawks don't really give a damn about the deficits; it's just an excuse to kill off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, programs that actually help ordinary Americans but are of no benefit to the 1 per centers who seem to control everything, especially our bought off politicians.

Nixon, also pushed for a Medicare for all method. Where people not offered insurance via their job could enroll. Obamacare is nothing more then Romney's Mass. Roll out, and why it is frankly puzzling to hear mouth breathing segment of the right call this socialism or communism.
Corporatist R's and D's see Medicare as a way to make healthcare a larger for profit enterprise... Call me crazy, but this is the one thing in the world I don't want a bean counter crunching for profit. The days of the family doctor and community hospitals are long gone... Replaced by mega health concerns who could care less about the health of a community, but health demographics of illness and how to monetize that. If you think any differently, think about like any other service industry. Think an energy company drilling etc, they may sponcer a few local events, but the driving force is a quarterly profit that beats Wall Stret valuation. I think it is time we remind ourselves that gov't is for the people. And Corporations are NOT people.

As PolitiFact has repeatedly pointed out, Beck's or the GOP's charge is false. The Affordable Care Act does not cut any benefits from Medicare subscribers, but seeks to reduce the growth of Medicare expenses by various policy changes, including modifying payments to healthcare providers, increasing premiums for well-off beneficiaries, and various administrative changes. The irony underlying the Republican charges - which highlights their abject cynicism - is that these same changes in the Medicare system were incorporated into the Republican budget passed by the House, with overwhelming Republican approval. The Ryan plan for Medicare would end Medicare as we know it, would really gut it and turn it into a cockamamie voucher system. The idea of the GOP being defenders of Medicare is laughable in the extreme.

You are correct under Ryan plan medicare would be a voucher system only affecting those under the age of 55. Those 55 an older would keep the same benefits currently received. Ryan's plan may not be perfect but medicare if not address will be bankrupt in 7 to 10 years. Obama's plan dis extend the life of medicare but did not address the underlying issue to the issues with the structure of the program. Obama stated this in an interview in June or July of 2010. He did in fact borrow around 800 million this year from medicare to cover expenses created with the healthcare act that is a fact. How he replaces those funds and the affect it has on medicare can be debated. Your points of fact are fine your opinions are misleading and you missed several facts the Republicans put in Medicaid and Medicare. I disagree with the premise they want to take away care they are looking for ways to strengthen the program and be fiscally sound. I am not saying all of their solutions are good but at least they are putting forward a plan. Obama praised Ryan for putting forward a serious plan for the future and stated that is should not be open criticism but rather the start of a talking point. I would like to see the counter plan offered by the democrats. I am hopeful they can work together and resolve this. For the record Beck is a smart guy, good business person and would be a good choice in my opinion.

I also would urge all voters to checkout Politifact.com or Factcheck.org to get a non-partisan perspective on all this political drama whether it be republican or democrat. Most of the 700 billion are cuts to the annual increases given medicare healthcare providers over ten years...so I guess doctors, hospitals, drug companies, and those cheating the system should be most upset. On the other hand, this money will be used to help pay for other aspects of Obamacare...so it could be that all these healthcare providers still get their money.....just by a different route. Total medicare spending is still projected to increase over this ten year period...it all just won't be going to the healthcare industry.

Kelly the CBO stated that you can't double count these cuts as reduction in expenses and additional revenue somewhere else. The said these cuts are being double counted. That was the CBO. The issue is well beyond the 700 or 800 million what about the system 10, 15 or 20 years from now do we really want to keep ignoring this and pushing this burden onto our children. I want to se something done about this.

The problem with Rush Holt is that he's Rush Holt. He has an awful record of voting with Mr. Obama. Time for him to go. I applaud Mr. Beck for telling the truth.

Vote Beck in 2012 and AGAINST Puliti and Kownacki in 2013.

This is so typical... This isn't the truth, it is the talking point of the RNCC. Read a little please..... It is a lie, because the RNCC knows that Medicaid is a losing issue so it is spun. and THIS is classic spin. R's have tried for decades to get their hands on Social Security and Medicare so that private interests can profit on it. and How cynical... The true safety nets in our society that we all can receive and have paid into should somehow be made into a for profit industry, and at the whim of the market.

Max, you need to stop drinking the Kool Aid. As for Lawrenceville Council... you have yet to tell us where we can cut. and you saw the books. so how are we to believe you... you are the classic moaner...

BTW, the average income in Lawrence is around 65k... Under the Ryan Budget or the Romeny plan, those people will pay over $4,000 more a year in taxes, and the debt won't even start to go down for decades as even MORE burden is placed on local Government so expect even higher property taxes.... that is just reality... read. read conservatives like Reagan Budget Director David Stockman etc... get away from the pajama media. big govt websites... read real wonks who get this stuff. they all will confirm this spin as contactual lies... stuff we don't need here or anywhere in this country.

@middle of the road: LBJ, A DEMOCRAT, was the one who fought for Medicare and Medicaid. Through his fierce efforts, Medicare and Medicaid were created and signed into law. LBJ was a DEMOCRAT, not a GOPer. The GOP fought against Medicare. So stop your ridiculous lies. Medicare was not thought up or created by Republicans, are you new to this country? Please, we don't need another far right wing tea party libertarian clown in the Congress, there are already enough Michelle Bachmanns in the House. Reagan and the AMA waged a well financed campaign against Medicare. If not for LBJ and the Democrats there would be no Medicare or Medicaid. Now the GOP is going to take credit for Medicare?????? In what alternate universe? Sure and the GOP created Social Security in 1935, ha, ha, ha, ha. Any other revisionist history you want to make up from fairy land? Romney/Ryan would end up making massive cuts to Medicare. Obama is not making cuts to Medicare, seniors will still get the same services and benefits. I'm just wasting my breath on Fox News, CNBC or NJ 101.5 listeners.

Fort Monmouth was recommended for closure by the Pentagon in May 2005. "BRAC voted in August 2005 to close the post; its decision was upheld by President George Bush and Congress. An appeal headed by U.S. Representatives Frank Pallone and Rush D. Holt, Jr. to remove the post from the list was made to the BRAC commission, but was rejected."

Oh that's right Holt and Pallone wrote a letter. That was the extent of their action. AND the letter was written only a short time before FM was closed. They BS'd the app which is a democRATic rag and obviously you and that moron on the bottom of the page believed them.

A letter?
First they appealed to the BRAC Commission, and then they introduced bills to congress to stop the closure and analyze the economic impacts, etc. (this in 2007)

"In a united front, legislators from both sides of the aisle introduced four bills — two in the House of Representatives and two companion bills in the Senate." (from the Asbury Park Press article)

Do you have any idea the effort and time required to introduce legislation for consideration by Congress? Congress voted "NO" on this legislation (or maybe they never made it out of committee, I don't know) but, in the end, Ft Monmouth was closed (officially in 2011). When it was apparent that nothing more could be done to stop the closure, NJ politicians started working on getting the area redeveloped.
OK..I'm done with this red herring FT Monmouth issue..

Kevin, thanks for the 2007 article. It's nice to have actual facts and information as opposed to made up nonsense. Holt, Pallone, Smith (R), Saxton (R), Lautenberg and Menendez all fought together to keep Fort Monmouth open. The Ds and Rs actually worked together for the greater good of NJ. It happens some times.

Patrick, you're clueless. Under the Romney/Ryan plan the tax cuts get extended. So how, exactly, do ppl making 65K see their taxes go up 4K? Time for YOU to put up or shut up with your false, useless facts.

Talk about a parrot repeating the talking points of a particular party. That's YOU (Patrick) to a "T"

Finally, as far as council, are you defending them now? Back in April you wanted them out. Now you're back on their side? How typical. The 3 man committee laid out 20+ recommendations to help balance the budget and lower our taxes so get a clue, Patrick. What have you done, exactly to fix the problem?

Max, sorry but you are parroting the Romney lies... The Tax Policy Center pointed out that the middle class will in fact raise taxes on the middle class. Romney who had used the The Tax Policy Center as an ibid throughout his primary run then called their report "garbage". So which Mitt do I believe? The one when he was running among his peers or the one when they disagree with him... The Tax Policy Center has said that under the Romney budget a family making 65k would pay 4k more a year. Google it.

I never wanted Lawrence Council 'out' I wanted them to find ways to work within the budget without huge tax hikes and service drops. To protect our property values.. to stand up for what we are owed by Trenton.. and one of the things I suggested, they are trying in getting paybacks from the Rider and Lawrenceville School.

Your suggestions where attack people making 60 to 70k a year as lazy. And sadly I work in New York City, so I really just don't have time to get involved micro locally.

Beck is being supported by the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). It sounds like such a nice group but in reality it is a far right wing wacko group that is rabidly anti-Medicare and is advising all doctors to drop out of Medicare. AAPS came to the defense of Rush Limbaugh over his drug abuse problems. It promoted the lie that there was a massive outbreak of leprosy caused by illegal immigrants. This was exposed as bunk and a lie but Lou Dobbs kept repeating the lie after it was exposed as such.

Patrick, what about ObamaCare's automatic tax increases on everyone? Medical Device companies (you think they are going to eat the tax hike or pass it on to you?)

Taxes on "Innovator Drug Companies" - Oh yeah, freaking brilliant. Let's tax the companies that are trying to innovate.

Taxes on Indoor Tanning services. (No, I never have or never have used one, but seriously, Obama will tax anyone and everyone) Again, do you think the tanning salons will eat the tax hike or pass it on? A lot of middle class folks use the tanning bed!

How about the new tax in 2013 that when you sell your house, 3.8% of the profit now goes to the Federal Government. Yes, I know you're going to say this only affects the rich, but not so. It will affect every homeowner sooner or later (especially as the housing market recovers in the next 5-10 yrs.) Everyone will have forgotten about the Complainer-in-Chief, but we will still be paying for his tax hikes.

I can go on. 100's of new taxes signed into law by Obama, Pelosi, Reid. Why do you think Pelosi said "You have to pass it to see what's in it."

Yes, vote for Obama. He's got your back! What a joke. Four more years of Chicago style politics, that will actually be worse, since he'll be accountable to No-one.

Remember him telling Vladimir Putin he'd have more flexibility after the election? And you're afraid of Romney?

Ohh come on... You are grasping at straws. Taxes under Obama are at the lowest they have been in 30 years. That is a fact. The rest of your rant is just unhinged anger...

now the reality of Obamacare.
Once Obamacare is fully enacted, this is the honest truth about extra taxes, an extra the medicare payroll taxes will remain the same for those making under 200k single or 250k married, if you make more then that they will increase from 2.9% to 3.8% on the money you make over the 200k/250k mark. Another increase is that investment income will be factored into income for Medicare taxes. So if you make more you pay more...

as for tanning... Look, we charge higher taxes for cigarettes and booze... cause we know that they are drains on our healthcare system. Well so is tanning. And just like smoking and drinking, if you want to do it you will pay a premium to do so. and thus now tanning is included in the sin taxes. so be it. Will it kill small businesses? no. In a CNN article "A full 78% of the salon owners polled reported that their clients did not seem to care about the tax, according to a study conducted by Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine."

as for the Medical Device tax, I'm not happy with it being revenue agnostic, but fact is any loss will be offset by a reduction in fed taxes that is based on P&L. and then...

as for your 3.8% real estate transaction tax... You are just way off base. The tax would be on your capital gains as stated above. So if you made over the 200k250k limit that profit would be factored into your medicare tax. So if you made 20k on a real estate sale, and you make 150k you would not be effected at all. If you made 300k and made the same 20k in a sale of a home, that 20k would be added to your increased medicare tax at 0.9% because it is now considered income.

I am sick of Rush Holt. He needs to go. Eric Beck looks to me like a smart, responsible and honest candidate! I also like what Chris Christie has done for our state. Aside from his personality, he has gotten a lot done for the state and people are beginning to see that even through all the rhetoric spooned at him... Anyway, I think this Beck guy is a good candidate and I wouldn't be surprised if NJ starts going in the conservative direction.

It is pretty obvious you do not know the man or what he stands for. Maybe some day you will be able to debate differencies in approaches to issues. I think Holt is a decent person and not a loon but in 14 years what are the real results is Jersey better of than it was 14 years ago. Holt is a true academian he has ideas and theories but nothing that is practical and easily put in place to better New Jersey.
