“It is my sincere hope that Emerge New Jersey will help increase the number of women who run for and win elected offices in this state,” says State Majority Leader Weinberg. In the 235 years since its statehood, New Jersey has elected only two Democratic Congresswomen no U.S. Senators and no NJ Governors. Currently, of 120 New Jersey State Legislators only 23 are Democratic women.
The inaugural training program will start accepting applications the day after the Fall Fundraiser, September 18, 2013, and continue through November 8, 2013. The class begins in January 2014. Applications will be available at http://www.emergenj.org/training/application. The Emerge program includes 70-hours of in-depth training to prepare women to run for office and master skills that range from public speaking and media outreach to fundraising and field operations.
Emerge New Jersey is one of 14 states in a national network that identifies, trains and encourages Democratic women to run for and achieve success in being elected for office. The Emerge network boasts remarkable results: 43% of the program’s graduates have run for office with a 60% success rate.
“We are excited to introduce Emerge New Jersey to prospective candidates,” said
Karen Hartshorn Hilton, Emerge New Jersey’s interim executive director, “and to provide the training needed to support women who aspire to run for Democratic office, making their desire to serve to become a reality.” Emerge New Jersey relies on the generosity of individual donors to support our work so we are hoping for a large turnout,” explains Hilton.
