Liquid Church to Bring Fresh Look to Elijah's Promise

200 volunteers from the church group will renovate the Elijah's Promise soup kitchen in 24 hours.

After serving hundreds of thousands of meals, even the most well-run of kitchens could use a little TLC.

The Elijah's Promise soup kitchen on Neilson Street will get that tender loving care from 200 pairs of hands this week as the soup kitchen is the subject of a comprehensive makeover on June 1 and June 2 by Liquid Church.

200 volunteers from the church group, which holds services in New Brunswick, Morristown and Nutley will work for 24 hours straight - 4 p.m. June 1 to 4 p.m. June 2.

The army of volunteers will paint, repair, polish, and improve the soup kitchen, where more than 100,000 meals are served annually to local residents in need, and the doors often opened as a temporary shelter to area homeless during harsh weather.

The group is using $20,000 to fund the renovation.

According to Rich Birch, Pastor of Operations for Liquid Church, the group previously aided another New Brunswick organization, Women Aware, in a similar makeover project.

"In the follow up from that project, Phyllis Adams (Women Aware Director) suggested that Elijah's Promise would be a fantastic community organization to serve," Adams said in a recent email to New Brunswick Patch. "They serve over 100,000 meals every year...and we wanted to encourage them."

Liquid Church Lead Pastor Tim Lucas and Executive Director Mike Leahy and Elijah's Promise Executive Director Lisanne Finston explain the scope of the renovation in a Liquid Church-produced video here.
