New Brunswick Free Public Library Holds Annual Summer Reading Fair

The library holds a fair for children who read 20 books or completed 25 hours of reading over the summer.

The New Brunswick Free Public Library held its annual Summer Reading Fair on Saturday to reward local kids for their summer reading endeavors.

Kids and their families went down an inflatable water slide, played games for prizes and dined on barbecue in the library's parking lot.

The fair is held every year as a reward for children who read either 20 books or complete 25 hours of reading through the library's summer reading program.

The program encourages New Brunswick youth to take out books to read over their vacation and once completed, the students return to the library to report to a librarian about what they read and log their process.

Prizes were awarded for hitting progressive milestones in the program, with the fair being the grand prize for readers who hit the highest milestone.

According to library director Bob Belvin, 567 kids in total participated in the program, resulting in a total of 5,459 books read over 5,796 hours.

According to the library, the fair was made possible through donations by The Friends of the New Brunswick Public Library, Old Man Rafferty’s, Wendy’s, Chili’s, Jersey Subs, Maoz, Starbucks, and Judy Freeman of Highland Park.
