New Brunswick Today Expands Online Reporting into Print

New Brunswick Today is available in spots all around town, including the train station and Hidden Grounds on Easton Avenue.

A hyperlocal website in town has expanded its online reporting and writing into a free printed newspaper that is all about New Brunswick.

New Brunswick Today, an independent website that focuses mainly on investigative reporting, unveiled 10,000 printed copies last week, featuring a slew of stories about New Brunswick in both English in Spanish.

They led their inaugural printed copy with stories regarding DEP involvement in the city water department and efforts by local worker advocacy group New Labor to curb wage theft in the city.

New Brunswick Today is produced by city residents Charlie Kratovil and Sean Monahan, with the help of a small team of reporters and photographers.

Kratovil, a Rutgers graduate and activist in the city said the printed version of the paper was funded through sponsorships.

A $2,500 investigative reporting grant from NJ News Commons also made it possible to pay the reporters who write for the publication, he said.

The paper was printed at the Princeton Packet's facilities in Princeton, and will be made available throughout the city, Kratovil said.

"Copies are available at all of our sponsors including Hidden Grounds, Downtown Printing, and Harvest Specialty Catering (in the Elks Lodge) as well as various other locations throughout the city," he said.

The paper has also been distributed to the train station, courthouse and other heavily trafficked spots around town, and will be made available at Board of Education, City Council and Freeholder meetings, Kratovil said.

Plans are in the works to offer subscriptions as well, he said.

Kratovil said the New Brunswick Today team aims to produce a monthly printed edition of the paper, with expansion in both its English and Spanish-speaking sections.
