Excessive Heat Predicted This Week

Temperatures are expected to rise and air quality to get worse as the week progresses.

This week is predicted to be uncomfortable, with a heat advisory in effect Wednesday through Friday, and an air quality alert beginning today and worsening on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service advises that temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 90's and potentially as high as 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the National Weather Service, residents should take the following precautions:

  • Avoid long periods of strenuous work outdoors in the heat. If outdoors, wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing, drink lots of water and schedule frequent breaks to avoid heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioning.
  • Check up on neighbors and relatives.

The heat, sun and light winds expected over the next few days has also resulted in an ozone alert, with air quality become potentially hazardous for people with respiratory problems, young children and the elderly, according to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Moderate ozone is expected across New Jersey today, but without dangerous levels, according to the DEP.

On Wednesday, ozone levels are expected to reach dangerous levels across the state, and the aforementioned groups of people should avoid strenuous activity outdoors during the day, according to the DEP.
