New Brunswick Declares State of Emergency

The City of New Brunswick has declared a state of emergency in advance of Hurricane Sandy. The following press release was sent out from the Mayor's Office Sunday night:

In anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, New Brunswick Mayor James Cahill declared a State of Emergency at 6:00 p.m. today, Sunday, October 28, 2012.

A voluntary evacuation for residents in the area from Neilson Street to the Raritan River between Albany Street and Commercial Avenue will begin at 6:00 p.m. A mandatory evacuation for this area will go into effect starting at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 29, 2012.

Residents should seek shelter with friends or relatives. For those residents who need shelter, Lord Stirling Community School on George Street will be open at 6:00 p.m. this evening.

As of 9:00 a.m. Monday the City will be shut down. Non-emergency personnel will not be allowed on City streets. Emergency personnel should have proper identification.

All City services will be suspended until further notice. New Brunswick Public Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday.

The city has also advised that Monday's trash pickup will be suspended.
