New Jersey Election 2013: Democrats Hold on in District 17

Bob Smith was re-elected to the state Senate, while New Brunswick native Joseph Egan and Upendra Chivukula held on to their Assembly seats.

The Democratic delegation in the 17th District held on to their seats in the state Senate and the General Assembly Tuesday night.

State Sen. Bob Smith downed Republican challenger Brian Levine, 22,741-15,322, according to unofficial results from the Middlesex and Somerset county clerks’ offices.

Both Assembly Democrats held on to their seats, including former New Brunswick Councilman Joseph Egan. Egan, an Assemblyman since 2002 and the Deputy Majority Leader since 2008, collected 23,590 votes, the most in the 17th District. Running mate Updendra Chivukula held on to his seat with 23,166 votes.

Republican challenger Carlo DiLalla was third with 13,700 votes, followed by running mate Sanjay Patel, with 12,226 votes.

The 17th District is comprised of Franklin, Milltown, New Brunswick, North Brunswick and Piscataway.
