From the 'Burg to the Barrio - Susan Ryan (Bordentown, New Jersey)
From the Burg to the Barrio offers a loving portrait of a New Jersey neighborhood in transition, with all of its tensions and contrasts as differing cultures meet. Long recognized as the Little Italy of Trenton, New Jersey, famed for its Italian restaurants, bakeries, and groceries, Chambersburg was a well-established working class neighborhood where Italian families lived in close proximity to each other. Today, the ‘Burg still attracts newly-arrived immigrant families, but they are from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and other Latin American countries. Italian bakeries continue to thrive, but now they operate alongside bodegas and Latino restaurants –and the sharing of food offers a bridge between old and new. 2012; 46 min.
