Former Rutgers Assistant Football Coach Dies

The East Brunswick community is mourning the death of Melvin A. Caseiro, 75, the former East Brunswick High School football team and Rutgers University assistant football coach who died Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Caseiro was born in South River and lived in East Brunswick for 48 years. He was a chemistry teacher head football coach at EBHS from 1968 to 1976. After that, he was an assistant coach with the Rutgers University football team from 1977 to 1985.

“Mel Caseiro was an outstanding teacher and coach. He was totally committed to his students and treated them as his own. Mel was also always helpful to his colleagues and a real pleasure to work with. He truly loved this district and was among the many outstanding staff who have walked our halls and have made the district what it is today,” said East Brunswick Superintendent Jo Ann Magistro.

Caseiro was an alumni of the University of Richmond, where he played football. He earned his bachelor of science degree there, and went on to earn his Master’s in Science from Viriginia State. He was an Army veteran, having served from 1959-1960 and also spent 10 years in the Army Reserves. 
Caseiro was an avid fly fisherman and was a member of Trout Unlimited as well as Lake Solitude Fly Fishing Club in Highbridge, N.J. He also enjoyed playing golf. 

A Communicant of Our Lady of Peace RC Church in North Brunswick, he and his wife were Eucharistic Ministers at the church.

His parents, John B. and Rosa Caseiro, are deceased. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Lois Hall Caseiro of East Brunswick; his beloved children, Tony of East Brunswick and Paula McLaughlin and her husband, Trip, of Virginia; two dear sisters, Mary Boszko of South River, and Rose Jarasowitz of North Carolina; and three loving grandchildren, Burke, Conor, and Maeve.

A 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Our Lady of Peace Church, 277 Washington Place, North Brunswick. Cremation will be private.
