New Brunswick Patch visited Filippo's on Sunday to see exactly what it is that makes their pie better than all the rest.

The parlor was a little less than half full with patrons around 6 p.m. Sunday. The interior is warm, clean and reminiscent of a kitchen in it's decor. It's a comfortable place to hang out.

We ordered a large pie, half plain, half pepperoni and mushrooms, an order of six mozzerella sticks, and a pitcher of cola.

The mozzarella sticks (six for $4.90) were thick and full of stretchy cheese, the mark of a good, fully cooked mozzerella stick.

The pizza took about 15 minutes to prepare, and was piping hot when it arrived at our table with paper plates. The plain slices were just OK. The sauce was a bit thin, the slices kind of doughy, but the crust was crispy and flavorful.

The pepperoni and mushroom slices had a lot more flavor overall, but were a bit greasy. We went through a few napkins blotting grease off the slices, but thankfully there was a napkin dispenser on the table. We liked the mushrooms used on the slices, as they were thick and tasty. Pepperoni tastes the same no matter where you order it.

We all agreed that while the pizza wasn't the best we have ever had, (no disrespect to the opinions of the readers) it was exactly what we were expecting. Sometimes you don't want anything fancy or frilly, just a slice of hot, cheesy pizza.

The pie was also more than three of us could finish with the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer.  We had slices to take home for lunch the next day.

Filippo's advertises $1.87 slices, and also makes hot and cold subs, salads, dinners, calzones and steak sandwiches.

They are also the makers of the famed "Monster Pie" a 26 inch behemoth of a pizza that sells for $22.
