22 People Displaced in Suydam Street Blaze

The fire began at 326 Suydam St. and spread down the block.

Suydam Street remains closed between Joyce Kilmer Avenue and French Street this morning after a three-alarm fire damaged multiple homes and displaced 22 people.

According to New Brunswick Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin McCann, firefighters responded to 326 Suydam St. at approximately 4:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire progressed to a three alarm blaze, spreading to unoccupied 328 Suydam St., and 330 Suydam St., as well as 51 Railroad Ave., located directly behind the Suydam Street homes.

A total of 22 people were displaced, McCann said.

One firefighter sustained minor cuts to his fingers, but no tenants were injured in the blaze, McCann said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

This is the second large fire of the week in New Brunswick. On Sunday, nine people were displaced in an unrelated blaze on Seaman Street
