Fire Rips Through Vacant Hassart Street House Thursday Morning

The house did not have any tenants currently living in it and no injuries were reported.

A Hassart Street house was destroyed in a fire Thursday morning, but no tenants were currently living in the house, according to fire officials.

The New Brunswick Fire Department responded to a 5:30 a.m. fire call at 84 Hassart St., and arrived to fire the 2.5 story wood-frame house actively ablaze, according to Deputy Chief Kevin McCann.

Firefighters prevented the spread of the flames to the house next door at 82 Hassart St., where eight people were evacuated. They were able to return to the home by 9 a.m., he said.

"The guys did a great job," he said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation, McCann said.

This fire is the third major blaze in two weeks, and the second fire to start in a vacant house. Fire Director Robert Rawls previously said that a Dec. 4 fire on Suydam Street may have been started by squatters.
