New Brunswick Man Imprisoned For 1990 Middlesex County Motel Stabbing Of Girl

A New Brunswick man has been sentenced to serve up to 25 years in a New Jersey state prison for fatally stabbing a 15-year-old girl in an Edison motel more than 23 years ago, Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced Wednesday.

Steven Parkey Jr., 43, was sentenced April 8, 2014 to the term in New Brunswick by Superior Court Judge Diane Pincus, who said the defendant must serve at least 12 ½ years before he can be eligible for parole.

The sentence was imposed after Parkey cut short his trial and pleaded guilty on February 6, 2014 to a count of aggravated manslaughter, admitting he killed Nikki Adams of New Brunswick on October 3, 1990.

Parkey pleaded guilty under an agreement reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Scott LaMountain and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Jason Seidman.

Parkey, who was a resident of Highland Park at the time of the homicide, was arrested and charged on August 25, 2010, following an intensive investigation by Detective John A. Canavera of the Edison Police Department and Investigator Michael Daniewicz and Sgt. Eleazar Ricardo, both of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The defendant was arrested after a new round of DNA testing linked Parkey to blood recovered from the crime scene.

Parkey was on trial at the time he decided to plead guilty. During the trial, LaMountain and Seidman presented evidence and testimony showing Parkey repeatedly stabbed the teenager in a room at what was then known as the Colonial Motel on Route 1 in Edison.

The testimony and DNA evidence contradicted Parkey’s contention to police that he did not commit the murder. Prior to pleading guilty, he denied being in the hotel.
