Overturned Oil Tanker Shuts Route 18 South and Route 1 North Interchange Sunday

According to police, the cleanup of the oil will take several hours.

An overturned oil tanker made a big mess on Route 18 Sunday morning, but did not result in any severe injuries, according to New Brunswick Police.

Currently, an area of Route 1 south is closed, just before the ramp to route 18 north. Route 18 north from East Brunswick is also closed in the interchange area, according to Lt. J.T. Miller of New Brunswick Police.

The tanker overturned on the Route 18 north ramp leading onto Route 1 south around 5:30 a.m.

The driver of the tanker ended up with a minor injury, and there was no fire or damage to other vehicles, Miller said.

At 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Miller said that the State Police have advised that the area will remain closed for approximately six hours to accommodate the cleanup.
