UPDATED: Man Shot on Remsen is Stable, Investigation Continues

A man was shot by police Tuesday evening in New Brunswick by New Brunswick Police, the latest in a winter of gun violence

Update: Feb. 1, 6:04 p.m.

A man shot by New Brunswick Police officers Tuesday night in New Brunswick is in stable but critical condition, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

Around 6:14 p.m. Tuesday, a man was shot in the area of Remsen Avenue and Seaman Street allegedly after police on routine patrol encountered him, and he fired shots from a gun.

The two officers fired their weapons in response, wounding the unidentified man, who was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

According to a release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, investigators closed of the area as a crime scene and immediately began interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene. The state Office of the Attorney General was also notified of the shooting.

The unidentified officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice when an officer is involved in a shooting, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
