New Brunswick Man Struggled, Grabbed Cop's Gun During Arrest, Police Say

Approximately 50 residents watched as two officers struggled with Latiff Qudir, police say.

Two New Brunswick Police Department detectives  were attacked by a man who bit them and grabbed one of their guns, in view of a New Brunswick neighborhood, police say.

At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the detectives approached Latiff Qudir, 50, of New Brunswick at the corner of Lee Avenue and Seaman Street to arrest him, when Qudir allegedly attacked them and grabbed at the gun of one of the detectives, according to a press release from the New Brunswick Police Department.

Qudir, who was wanted in Piscataway on a first-degree armed robbery warrant, was subdued with the help of backup officers, and additionally charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, attempting to disarm a police officer and resisting arrest, the release said.

Police Director Anthony Caputo said Qudir appeared to be under the influence of a dangerous substance, due to his behavior and "unusual strength."

One of the detectives was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for lacerations and bite wounds and released, according to the release.

City spokesman Russell Marchetta said the police department is not releasing the names of the detectives at this time.

Caputo said around 50 people from the neighborhood watched the attack, some filming it on their cell phones.

Anyone with footage of the struggle is asked to call Sgt. Mark Pappas at (732) 745-5218.
