UPDATE: Bus Driver Remains in Critical Condition, Another Victim Upgraded to Serious Condition

New Jersey State Police are now reporting that the bus driver who had earlier been reported as being killed in this afternoon's accident on the New Jersey Turnpike has been revived at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He remains in critical condition, according to the NJSP.

Two other people were seriously injured in the accident, which involved a collision between bus and a tractor-trailer on the N.J. Turnpike near Exit 8A in South Brunswick shortly before noon.

Hospital spokesman Peter Haigney said a total of seven victims from the accident were treated at Robert Wood Johnson. The bus driver remains in critical condition as of 5 p.m., while another patient has been upgraded from critical condition to serious condition.

Five other patients were brought in fair condition, three of whom have been treated and released, Haigney said.

According to the New Jersey State Police, the accident occurred at 11:54 a.m. with a bus and one tractor-trailer, with a second tractor-trailer possibly becoming involved immediately following the impact.

South Brunswick Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan said South Brunswick EMS was en route to the scene at 12:30 p.m.

Two victims were reportedly extricated from the bus. The state police reported 14 minor injuries, with the two most serious being transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick by Medevac helicopter.

The driver of the bus, who has not been named, reportedly died from his injuries before being revived at approximately 4 p.m., according to the NJSP. There were around 30 to 40 people on the bus.

The accident occurred on the N.J. Turnpike's southbound outer roadway, just north of Exit 8A/Rt. 32 in South Brunswick. All lanes are closed to traffic. There are significant traffic delays in the area.

The southbound lanes of the Turnpike have been shut down, with traffic slowly being allowed to pass on the shoulder of the roadway. Significant delays are expected for the time being, according to the state police.

As of 5 p.m., the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is reporting a three-mile, 10 minute delay.
