Local Girl Scout Troop Leader Dishes on Cookie Season

A local Girl Scout troop is selling cookies this month at the Route 1 Sears and on Douglass Campus

Girl Scout cookie season. Is there anything more sweet?

Sugary puns aside, you've probably noticed Girl Scouts of America troops setting up tables at your local supermarket, or heard from a coworker who is taking cookie orders for their daughter or niece.

Here in New Brunswick, one troop is working hard to sell their sweets.

According to Annie Abram, who oversees in New Brunswick both a Cadette troop with six girls and a Senior/Ambassador troop with five girls, the money generated goes toward offsetting local costs.

"Our girls are not all consistant with paying dues so we use the money for trips, events, crafts etc.," Abram said. "The cookie sale teach girls how to market their product and they get to meet all kinds of people. They also learn how important it is to know how to count."

Cookie season begins on Jan. 19 and ends on Feb. 26, or when the last box is sold, Abram said.

In the past, the Troop saw great sales at the Douglass and Livingston campuses of Rutgers University, Abram said. However, costs to table there have limited the availability of Rutgers sale spots.

"The girls had fun talking to the college students and lt was so exciting to see the students face light up when they saw girl scout cookies," she said. "Now it just costs too much unless we have college students to sponsor us."

Everyone has a favorite cookie, but of which kind does the local Girl Scouts sell the most?

"The most popular cookies are thin mints and caramel delights, next it was shortbread and either one of the peanut butter cookies," Abram said.

Abram said that she herself was only a Girl Scout for one month as a child, due to a lack of adult volunteers.

"So I decided to be a volunteer to help out the troop that started in 1991 at Sharon Baptist Church when my daughters joined. And here I am so many years later still volunteering," she said.

Abram's troop will be selling cookies at the Sears on Route 1 in New Brunswick on the following dates: Feb. 11, 12, 18, and 20, and on Douglass Campus at Rutgers University on Feb. 25.
