Dr. John Arthur Meade went to the last “Roundup” in the sky on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. He was 84. Born in Coldwater, MI, he resided in Kentland, MD before moving to East Brunswick in 1966. Prior to his retirement in 1992, he was a Professor of Agronomy at Rutgers University, New Brunswick on the Cook College Campus for 25 years, and was a part of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Prior to that, he did research at the University of Maryland. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Maryland, and his Doctorate from the University of Iowa Class of 1958. He was a member of the NJ Christmas Tree Growers Association, and the Northeastern Weed Control Conference. He was a Peacetime Veteran of the US Navy, …

Francis L. Lawrence, who served nearly 12 years as the 18th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died Tuesday at his home in Mount Laurel, N.J. Lawrence, who came to Rutgers in October 1990 from Tulane University, New Orleans, where he was chief academic officer, was 75 years old. Lawrence served the university during a period of remarkable change. When he began his tenure, the internet was used primarily by scientists, rather than students, and the nation was poised for economic growth. When he left office in 2002, the internet was part of daily life and the nation was struggling following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Services for the 6-year-old Toms River boy who was fatally shot by a 4-year-old neighbor while the pair were playing will be held Friday and Saturday. Visitation for Brandon Holt will be held Friday, April 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., as well as Saturday, April 13 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals in Toms River. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Toms River, according to Holt’s obituary. What made Ilona “Loni” Merel, one of the greatest patient advocates ever to travel the halls of Roosevelt Care Center in Edison, was that she wasn’t championing a particular cause – she was the keeper of her home. After nearly three decades as a Roosevelt resident, the former Rutgers University professor and one of the Center’s most memorable figures died Jan. 8 at the age of 86. Staff, fellow residents and visitors are still coming to grips with the loss, what many described as a devastating blow to the Roosevelt community. The long-standing President of the Resident Council is largely remembered for her public criticism of the residents’ monthly, state-issued $35 Medicaid stipend, the sum of which Merel deemed inadequate.
