The New Brunswick Domestic Violence Awareness Coalition held its 11th Annual March and Rally against domestic violence on Oct. 20 at the Hub Teen Center on Jersey Avenue. The organization was joined by a number of local organizations, including Women Aware, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, UMDNJ's Eric B. "Because a Mother Holds Her Family in Her Heart"

Women Aware shares stories of client successes with New Brunswick Patch in this special Mothers Day feature.

Editor's Note: For Mothers Day, we asked Women Aware, an agency that assists women and children in escaping domestic violence, based in New Brunswick, to share with us some stories of client successes. The following stories are true accounts of clients of Women Aware. The first story is an account of a conversation with a client, written by the agency's Safe House manager. The second story the agency provided includes the story and artwork of a 12-year-old girl who is enrolled in art therapy at Women Aware. We hope that these stories present a thoughtful look at Mothers Day, one that includes all mothers, some living with very different situations than others. Local Domestic Violence Victims' Advocates Honored by Women Aware

Women Aware Inc. recognizes those who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of people affected by domestic violence.

With a message of strength and hope, New Brunswick's Women Aware Inc. held its annual Moving Beyond Abuse Awards and Awareness breakfast in Edison last week. For over 30 years, Women Aware has provided a comprehensive range of services for victims of domestic violence, with legal services, counseling, meals and emergency shelter. "We remain mission focused. We really get that it's not about us, it's about the clients we serve," said Executive Director Phyllis Adams. "We're here for one reason. We're here to help people impacted by domestic violence." Founded in 1979, Women Aware has sheltered over 200 women and children in their Safe House, provided over 24,000 meals and assisted more than 1,000 clients with legal advocacy. "Domestic …

Women Aware Assists Clients Seeking Shelter from Domestic Violence

Organization provides shelter, counseling, food and assistance with jobs and education.

Over the past 30 years, Women Aware, a free and confidential organization that assists women and children in domestic violence situations, has come to the aid of thousands of clients from all over Middlesex County. The only domestic violence agency and hotline for the county, Women Aware provides food, shelter, counseling for women and children, accommodation and amenities for women who may have to abruptly leave their homes, and long term assistance including help with job hunting and education. According to the agency, 30 years ago, the focus of domestic violence agencies was to shield their clients from immediate dangers.
