National Report on Higher Education Documents State's Shrinking Support for Public Colleges

Cutting funding boosts tuition, reduces course offerings, and -- according to one expert -- can deter businesses from moving to New Jersey.

New Jersey has cut funding for public colleges by more than a quarter since the start of the recession, resulting in higher tuition at the exact time layoffs and salary cuts were making it more difficult for many families to pay more, according to a new national report. The study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that, nationally, states are spending an inflation-adjusted $2,353, or 28 percent, less per student this year than in 2008. New Jersey’s reduction of $2,549 per student was the 20th largest in the nation. And it's taking a toll in a number of ways. Middlesex County College's New Brunswick Center offers Several Summer Classes in the City

All MCC students can use the Center for tutoring, registration and payment.

Middlesex County College's New Brunswick Center is currently enrolling students for its second summer semester, beginning right after July 4. The center, located on New Street at Joyce Kilmer Avenue, is one of the county college's two satellite locations separate from the main Edison campus. The other is located in Perth Amboy. Evelyn Rosa, center director, said the New Brunswick building was opened in 2000, but the county college has had a presence in New Brunswick for 31 years. 747 students were enrolled at the center this past spring, and in summer 2010, 256 students took classes at the site, said Tom Peterson, spokesman for the college. Summer 2011 enrollment numbers have not yet been finalized, but may ahead of the summer 2010 numbers…
