From 2:45-4:45 p.m. Friday, March 15, residents may have their picture taken with the cup for free, meet Fuleco, the official World Cup Brazil mascot and compete in a soccer challenge to win prizes. The "Energy Play station" will provide informative activities for families, and "Engage with Safe Kids" will be on hand to dispense information about preventing injuries. Kids and teens from all over New Jersey competed on Sunday in their own home made soap box derby racing cars for a chance to compete in the international derby race in Akron, Ohio.
Three young drivers from New Jersey will advance to the 75th Annual All American Soap Box Derby on July 21st in Akron, Ohio following Sunday's New Brunswick Soap Box Derby. Held on Johnson Drive, the race featured 37 young soapbox racers, facing off in derby racers that they built themselves with their families and friends. A classic car show by the Hollywood Night Cruisers was held in the nearby Johnson & Johnson parking lot during the derby. The day's sponsors included Turtle & Hughes, Johnson & Johnson and the City of New Brunswick. More than a dozen protesters gathered outside of the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Thursday to protest products and practices of Johnson & Johnson during the company's annual shareholders meeting. Occupy Big Pharma NJ and Occupy New Brunswick said their focuses of the day were to bring attention to Johnson & Johnson's involvement with the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC, and to draw attention to controversies over products produced by the company, which lately have included a settlement over the drug Risperdal, a malfunctioning artificial hip being sold overseas, and a massive recall of Children's Tylenol. In the shadow of Johnson & Johnson's main corporate offices, protesters from Occupy New Brunswick called for the pharmaceutical giant to end its involvement in the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC. ALEC is a lobbyist group that includes both politicians and corporations and allows those corporations influence in drafting laws. Johnson & Johnson is part of the group, as are Monsanto, Bank of America, Pfizer and Wal-Mart. When handling a soapbox derby racer, the key to winning lies in the wheels. "(You) can win by a thousandth of a second,'' said Charlie Miller, of Keyport. On Sunday, the annual New Brunswick Soap Box Derby was held for kids all over the state. It is the qualifying event that sends winning racers to the national races in July. Miller's two daughters, Meredith, 15, and Julianne, 12, are both soap box derby racing champions for the state of New Jersey, and Meredith is this year's "Rally Champ," an achievement that will send her all the way to the national derby races.
