La Liga New Brunswick Brings Together Middlesex, Somerset County Residents for Futbol

More than 4,000 men, women and children play on recreation league teams.

When Roberto Solano started La Liga New Brunswick, he never thought it would grow into what it has become 20 years later. What started as 20 teams and a few hundred players has become a soccer league with over 4,000 participants involved at all levels. There are youth teams, adult teams and women’s teams in the New Brunswick-based league that has now spread to the surrounding communities. The league, in which 90 percent of the players are Hispanic, is based in Middlesex County, with games played in South Brunswick, North Brunswick, Piscataway, Milltown, Franklin, Somerset, Highland Park and Bound Brook in addition to New Brunswick. “We started in New Brunswick but we have people who play from all over,” said Solano, who started the league …

La Liga New Brunswick meets on weekends in Johnson Park for adult and youth games. Headquartered in New Brunswick, the league has over 4,000 participants.
