News12 Examines January School Board Elections

"Kane in Your Corner" addresses alleged mistakes and inaccuracies in January's special school board elections.

New Brunswick's January school board elections were the subject of a recent report on News12's "Kane in Your Corner." The investigative program featured interviews with New Brunswick residents Cedrick Goodman and Charlie Kratovil and George Hendricks, attorney for the New Brunswick board of education. Goodman ran for a seat in January's historic elections and lost. Kratovil is a city resident and activist and author of the website New Brunswick Today, which has heavily discussed the elections and has repeatedly suggested impropriety in the way they were handled at the city and county level. BOE Candidates Discuss the Issues in Public Forum

The public got to meet the New Brunswick BOE candidates face to face on Thursday night.

Despite slim public attendance at Thursday night's Meet the Candidates night, the six candidates for New Brunswick's board of education covered a lot of ground, discussing New Brunswick's graduation rate, gang issues, charter schools, after-school programs and curriculum. Moderator Vince Riccifi read questions posed by community residents, several of which asked about what the candidates would do to improve New Brunswick's graduation rate and test scores. All six candidates running for the board participated in the panel, hosted by Unity Square. Thursday: Meet the BOE Candidates at an Open Forum

Candidates will answer questions about their views on education issues at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lord Stirling Community School.

New Brunswick is less than a week out from its first regular school board election, and the candidates for the board of education will answer questions on Thursday night as to why they are running, their views on education issues, and what they hope to accomplish in New Brunswick. Unity Square will hold a public forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Lord Stirling Community School, 101 Redmond St. Spanish translation will be available to those who need it. Meet The New Brunswick School Board Candidates

School board elections will be held on April 16 in New Brunswick.

New Brunswick voters will vote for three more school board members on April 16 during the first regularly scheduled election. Six candidates are running for three seats on the board, three incumbents and three newcomers. Unity Square, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization in New Brunswick, distributed a questionnaire to each of the candidates, the answers to which can be viewed by clicking the links below: A $27.3 million tax levy in support of a $195 million school budget will also be on the ballot. Ground Broken at Redshaw School Site

The elementary school is slated to be completed by the 2014-15 school year.

Better late than never. On Thursday morning, New Brunswick officials, joined by the School Development Authority, Sen. Bob Smith and dozens of A.C. Redshaw Elementary School students broke ground on the the site of what will finally be a new building for the beleaguered school. A.C. Redshaw students will have been in a converted warehouse space on Jersey Avenue for 10 years by the time the new school opens in the 2014-15 school year. The new Redshaw school will be 135,000 sq. feet, with 44 classrooms, six kindergarten classrooms and 10 early childhood classrooms. It will also have an art room, a computer lab, a gymnasium and a cafeteria, said Superintendent Richard Kaplan. And, after nearly 10 years, Redshaw will have a playground, facing …

NFL Stars to Return to New Brunswick for Basketball Game

Rutgers Alumni now playing in the NFL will be at New Brunswick High School on Friday night.

Some of the biggest names to come out of New Brunswick and Rutgers University will return to the Hub City on Friday night for a celebrity basketball game. Ten Rutgers University football players who are currently playing in the NFL will be at New Brunswick High School  for the game, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday, March 15. The Celebrity Team will include the following players, according to Mike Blackwell, Director of New Brunswick Recreation: The Celebrity Team will play against the City All-Stars, which is a roster of four teams each playing one quarter each. New Brunswick to Get $122.6 Million of Christie's Proposed $8.7 Billion in School Aid

Aid numbers show a 1.9 percent increase in aid for the district over 2013.

Despite the shadow of sequester cuts looming over education, New Brunswick's state aid numbers are strong, with an increase of 1.9 percent, according to a report on NJ Spotlight. New Brunswick's school budget for the 2014 school year will be padded with a proposed $122.6 million in total aid, a 1.9 percent increase over $120.2 million in 2013. Superintendent Richard Kaplan said a $2.3 million increase in general aid has been proposed, as well as a $1.3 million increase in early childhood aid. The NJ Department of Education has promised $8.7 billion in state aid to the state's 580 school districts. The overall increase was one percent, but only 300 districts saw any worthwhile increases in their aid, according to the report. Stay informed …

Public Meets Elected Board Members at Tuesday BOE Meeting

Diana Fajardo and Ronald Hush had their first public meeting as elected school board members on Tuesday night.

New Brunswick's new Board of Education members met the public on Tuesday night at their first public meeting. Diana Fajardo and Ronald Hush are the first board of education members to be elected through public vote in New Brunswick. Their seats were added to the board following the results of a November election that converted the board of education from appointed to elected. Fajardo and Hush both thanked the public for voting them into office. Fajardo thanked her family for support, while Hush said he would work to the best of his ability serve the children in the school district. New Fitness Center Means New Swimming Program for New Brunswick Students

The public school district will soon begin a swimming instruction program for fourth graders in New Brunswick.

New Brunswick students will soon take to the water with the commencement of a partnership between the school district and the new Robert Wood Johnson Fitness and Wellness Center. The school district has implemented a swimming instruction program for fourth graders in the district that will begin with the basics of swimming and aims to guide them through intermediate swimming. According to superintendent Richard Kaplan, for the duration of one semester, fourth graders will be transported by bus to the fitness center two days a week, where they will have 50 minutes of swim instruction per day. All students will begin with swimming basics, regardless of their skill level, and then will be split up into groups as they advance into intermediate…

Buono to Kick Off Gubernatorial Campaign in New Brunswick

Sen. Barbara Buono will hold a rally at New Brunswick High School on Saturday.

Sen. Barbara Buono has picked New Brunswick High School as the site to begin her campaign for state governor. At noon on Saturday, Feb. 2, Buono (D-Middlesex) will host "Rally for New Jersey's Future" at New Brunswick High School, 1000 Somerset St. Buono, a resident of Metuchen, has been a senator since 2002.  In the last few years, she has locally campaigned for domestic violence victims, introduced legislation to transform foreclosed homes into affordable housing, and to approve charter schools through local voting, and voted in favor of a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in New Jersey.
