In its 47th year, the Annual Open House Festival and Wine Tasting will showcase some of Rutgers Gardens' newest features and flowers.
On Saturday, July 28, Rutgers Gardens will host its 47th Annual Open House and Wine Tasting from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., rain or shine. This year’s theme is “Gardening for the Senses,” and the event will feature presentations from Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Program Associates, Master Gardeners, horticulture experts, wine experts, and more. “It’s a way of giving support to the Gardens,” said event organizer Mary Ann Schrum of Rutgers Gardens. Tours of the Donald B. Lacey Display Garden will be led by Rutgers Gardens volunteers hourly. The Display Garden contains plantings of annual, tropical, and perennial flowers, as well as herbs and vegetables. Rutgers Gardens offers a summer camp for children ages 9 to 13.
What do you get when you mix moss with plain yogurt? Aside from a lumpy concoction you do not want to drink, when you blend these ingredients together, you create a moss milkshake. Campers at the Rutgers Gardens Summer Camp learn firsthand this trick to growing moss on various surfaces, as well as how to survey streams for pollution and how to identify trees with texture rubbings of different kinds of bark. “That’s the wonderful thing about this place – it’s a playground that keeps changing,” said Children’s Program Coordinator Debbie Henry. The Gardens offers a week long day camp twice in the summer for children who are interested in learning about nature by exploring various environments. City students enrolled in after-school programs explore Rutgers Gardens with hands-on activities and gain appreciation for green spaces.
Building a fairy house has its rewards. Apart from providing whimsical woodland dwellers with accommodations away from the elements, construction of these natural abodes demonstrates the importance of balance and proportion, as well how to utilize one’s natural surroundings creatively.
