Rutgers Begins Week with UMDNJ Addition

The anticipated merger of Rutgers University and UMDNJ went through on Sunday.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey (UMDNJ) is now a part of Rutgers University, following the official merger of the two schools on Sunday.

The two were scheduled to be officially joined on Sunday. The move consolidates seven of UMDNJ's eight schools into the state university, and increases Rutgers' student population to 65,000 students, according to a report on nj.com.

In addition to the Rutgers-UMDNJ merge, a state-directed restructuring over higher education in NJ will see the remaining UMDNJ school, University Hospital in Newark, become a free-standing institution; the Rutgers Board of Governors will add additional members to better oversee the Rutgers Camden and Newark campuses; and Rowan University will be expanded.

The Rutgers-UMDNJ merger is anticipated to cost the university approximately $75 million over the next few years, according to the report.
