New Brunswick Housing Inspector Suspended

Chief housing inspector Michael Mahony has been suspended without pay, according to the mayor's office.

The chief housing inspector for the city of New Brunswick has been suspended without pay, according to an announcement made from the mayor's office early Saturday evening.

Michael Mahony is a longtime city employee. Mayor's office spokesman Russell Marchetta could not comment on the actual date of Mahoney's suspension.

Mayor James Cahill released a statement on Saturday stating the New Brunswick Police Department is involved in the investigation.

“At the present time, I am unable to comment on the basis for the suspension or the specific disciplinary charges against Mr. Mahony," Cahill said. "However, the City has been involved in a long term investigation, at the beginning of which, Police Director Anthony Caputo advised me could be far-reaching and have significant and serious implications. At that time, Director Caputo requested additional resources and reallocation of police personnel. That request was granted without reservation or restriction.”

This is a developing story. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
