Rutgers Grease Trucks on the Move Later This Month

The trucks must move by Aug. 15 for safety reasons in preparation for a redevelopment project.

Just over a year after the Rutgers University Board of Governors approved a $295 million redevelopment deal, the school’s famous grease trucks are getting ready to move.

The grease trucks must leave the College Avenue campus parking lot by Aug. 15, but officials said they won’t be leaving campus, nj.com reports.

Construction for the redevelopment of properties around the center of campus is set to begin in September, but officials with the New Brunswick Development Corporation (Devco) said trucks must leave the area by Aug. 15 for safety reasons, according to the report.

Redevelopment includes the purchase of a part of the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, and the construction of a mixed use building Lot 8, where the trucks are located.

Officials from Devco and Rutgers are working with the trucks to set them up in other areas of the campus, according to the report.

The grease trucks have held a strong presence at Rutgers for more than 20 years, and are famous for their "fat" sandwiches stuffed with things like hamburgers, cheesesteaks, mozzarella sticks and french fries.
